Festival Diary: Day 5
On Saturday afternoon, I attended the WSFF’s Master Class at the Isabel Bader Theatre to learn more about filmmaking from the perspective of Montreal-based auteur, Jean-Marc Vallée (Café de Flore, The Young Victoria). CTV’s resident film critic, Richard Crouse, moderated the symposium.
Vallée took to the stage to thunderous applause wearing a creepy mask, (which he explained he would don later that evening at The Night Shift screening). He went into great detail about the process of writing and directing films, the subtle use of special effects in his work, and the fact that casting alone ...

Festival Diary: Day 4
It’s no secret that music videos are becoming more and more like short films in terms of both aesthetics and storytelling. Exotic locales, Hollywood A-listers, and even big-time directors are a staple of most music videos today. The 9th edition of Scene Not Herd contained 12 of today’s most arresting and cutting-edge short films music videos. From electro-pop to indie and hip-hop to folk, this collection covers a range of musical genres.
At first, I found it really difficult to judge the videos based on the visuals alone—the songs really make or break it for me ...

Festival Diary: Day 3
Everyone loves a famous face, and none more than me, (ok, maybe my sister)! But team those famous faces with ingenious plots and gorgeous cinematography, and you have cinematic gold!
Last night, I caught the ever popular and highly anticipated CELEBRITY SHORTS screening at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. I bought my tickets early for this one—even before I was asked to be official festival blogger—because I had heard such great things about the lineup from people who had attended WSFF in previous years. Not your typical mixed bag of shorts, the films that comprise this programme are ...

Festival Diary: Day 2

Day Two of #wsff12 saw me take in an afternoon screening about love at the Isabel Bader Theatre at U of T’s picturesque Victoria campus. At the heart of nearly every film is a love story. And the eight shorts that make up the LOVE HURTS programme are no exception.
In some cases, you may have to peel back the layers to find the love—like with MOVING STORIES, a short that combines stunning visuals of a flying plane with archival narration to tell the story of a man lusting after a mysterious woman—while other times it may ...
