A brilliant animation director who is highly popular with the younger generation for his cool images and music selection sense. He first rose to fame in the TV animation series COWBOY BEBOP released in 1998, and also for COWBOY BEBOP THE MOVIE THE DOOR TO HEAVEN. Following that, he created a wild and tasteful world in the period animation SAMURAI CHAMPLOO. He also directed two episodes of completely different styles for THE ANIMATRIX in A DETECTIVE STORY and KID’S STORY. His contribution to STUDIO4˚C’s omnibus project GENIUS PARTY is the episode BABY BLUE.
Born in 1965 in Kyoto, Watanabe joined Sunrise under the production team, before becoming a choreographer. Watanabe is also well-known for his use of music, and his collaboration of jazz and hip-hop music with animation scenes in his choreography. As such, he also received much support from music lovers and musicians themselves. Watanabe also served as the music producer for Masaaki Yuasa’s MINDGAME.
